Visitor Center & Torii Gate Workshop & Rendezvous
May 27-June 8, Sechelt, British Columbia
Description
In Sechelt, British Columbia, May 27-June 9, we are framing two structures: a 48' x 29' 5-bent hammer beam truss (with ornamental tie rod) addition that will serve as a Visitor Center for the Sechelt Community Center. Another project involves building a torii gate for the town's Maritime Gateway project at a different location; it will be erected at the head of a public pier marking the transition from sea to shore. Made of red cedar, the gate's round columns measure some 27" in diameter and 16' tall.
Participants during the first week perform the layout and cutting for both structures, with the raising happening over the weekend, June 7-8. The first bent is raised by crane, the next 4 by hand. The instructional team includes Dave Gaker (Timberframes Ltd.),
Mark Olson (Murray Worldwide Timber Framing), Grigg Mullen and Joel McCarty.
Michael Goldberg and Richard Wiborg perform yeoman duty on the Torii Gate.
Our thanks to local organizers Guild member John Verge and Trudy Diening of D&V Logworks, as well as to Leo Oesterle and Mafell Canada for providing tool support.
Thanks for the generous support of Construction Aggregates Limited, provider of materials and money to help make this project a success.
