The Obelisk Project
August-September 1999
continued

The blocks surrounding the stone pit have been removed, and we can clearly see the base of the obelisk in the turning groove and the 15 degrees needed to make it stand upright. Right: Jim Kricker adjusts the ropes at the obelisk peak.

Saturday morning training sessions conducted by Joel McCarty. Using a model of the obelisk and ropes, small groups of pullers practice the technique of pulling very, very gently.

A large group of some 150 pullers included students and faculty at the Massachusetts College of Art, Fletcher Granite Quarry workers and their families, and many other veterans of Rick and Laura Brown's projects.

After many practice sessions, the obelisk slowly and gently descends to 90 degrees upright.

Grigg Mullen and Rick Brown are interviewed immediately after the successful raising.

Crowds gather at the base to view the obelisk. Right: The turning groove.
