Hertzler Barn Project George Rogers Clark Historic Park, Springfield, Ohio
July 7-21, 2007
The Timber Framers Guild and volunteers will help the Clark County Park District restore, reassemble, and raise a historic barn at the George Rogers Clark Historic Park, in Springfield, Ohio. There will be a Barn Repair and Reassembly Workshop July 7-21, capped off with an old-fashioned barn raising Saturday, July 21.
The original 40 x 60-ft. Hertzler Barn was built in 1854, about the same time as the Daniel Hertzler House, a Pennsylvania Style Bank house built for a wealthy Mennonite farmer. The house still stands and is open for tours in the George Rogers Clark Park. The barn was dismantled in 1951, leaving just a foundation and roof.
In 2005, the Clark County Park District found a Montgomery County barn of similar size and scale to the old Hertzler Barn. This Chamberlin barn was scheduled for demolition, but the District rescued it in 2006. Guild Board member Rudy Christian and his company, Christian & Son, were instrumental in the detailed documentation of the barn. It is this Chamberlin barn that will be repaired and resized in the workshop to rest upon the upgraded Hertzler Barn foundation.
Our hosts, Tim DeVore (of the Board of Park Commissioners of the Clark County Park District) and Jim Campbell (of the National Trail Parks & Recreation District) have lots of fun surprises in store for us, including evening events to celebrate the history of George Rogers Clark Park. You won't want to miss the Raising Party on the evening of Saturday, July 21.

About the Workshop
The Barn Repair and Reassembly Workshop will use a combination of salvaged and new timbers and include training on stabilization, jacking, replacement of sills, repair and/or replacement of joints, flooring, girders, queen posts, braces, purlins and other barn frame components; laying a new floor at the sill level, modification of the barn frame to fit the existing foundation; and cutting and installing common rafters.
The Hertzler Barn project leader is Vince Leyendecker from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Vince has more than twenty years' experience in the woodworking trades including timber framing and more than ten years' experience in management of projects and staff. He has been part of a number of Guild projects, including acting as an Instructor on the Children's Garden Pavilion in Nacogdoches, Texas, and the Project Coordinator for the Studio Workshop for the Botanical Garden Society of the Ozarks in Arkansas. Vince will be joined by an experienced crew of timber framers including Brian Beals, Dane Gustafson, Tom Cundiff and Kevin Brennan, who will be our instructors.
The leadership team will meet from July 2 to July 6 for planning and site layout. Workshop participants will arrive on July 7 at noon for lunch, introductions and sleeping assignments. The workshop will end on Saturday, July 21, at 6 p.m. after the raising and the clean up are complete. The workshop fee is $250.
Participants should bring a tool kit. The Guild will supply a recommended list of tools for participants to bring. Participants who want to help with the "high work" should bring their own fall protection harness. All participants will be required to sign an injury waiver, and will be requested to sign a photo waiver. Electric tools will be subject to inspection.
About Our Location: George Rogers Clark Park
As the only Revolutionary War battle site in Ohio, the George Rogers Clark Park has held national attention since its dedication in 1924. The park and its stone sculpture memorial honor General George Rogers Clark, a Revolutionary War leader who oversaw the defense of the Northwest Territory. This new territory would later be explored by George's younger brother, William Clark, and Meriwether Lewis. Today, the Park offers re-enactments and information about 18th century frontier life.
The 248 acre park includes picnicking, hiking, fishing, without a license (Hosterman Lake), and non-motorized boating. Accessible fishing is available at the Accessible Observation Deck on Hosterman Lake.
Accommodations
Food and accommodations will be provided by our host organization, the Clark County Park District. Lodging is camping on site with portable showers provided. The campground has electricity, but no water or sewer hook-ups. Fresh water is available at all times. There is an RV dumpsite available nearby. Indoor rest room facilities are available on the other side of a 15-acre field.
