Local News Coverage: Raising Day

Day 19 Report

Not much of a report tonight, as we are toast from building bents all day. It looks like we are ready for tomorrow, Raising Day.

The big tents are all empty, and the timber yard is as organized as the Library of Congress. We have done our Fall Protection inventory, figured out crowd control with the Park folks, and assigned responsibilities for various frame components and procedures. Rudy Christian, at the Pre-Raising Meeting, assigned us all meaningful work for tomorrow; and we have a much clearer idea of how things will unfold.

It will be a real challenge to finish the raising tomorrow, but that is the target. There is nothing left to do except sleep, and dream of success. Wish us luck.

  1. Testing the rig rotation at sun up. We took a quiet moment before bent building to prove our concept of mast rotation; 4 strong folks, 4 cant-hooks, and around she goes. Harder than it looks.
  2. The Fish; you've seen it before, you'll see it again in place.
  3. Bent building proceed apace.
  4. New arrival Chris Roberts takes a turn at pegging, and gets it right the first time.
  5. Project Manager Vince Leyendecker keeps the flywheel turning in detail (it is ALL in the details) at deck's edge.
  6. Less cackling; more eggs. Plenty of hands on deck, but only Ray Susong is building Bent 4.
  7. Carving Crew: (Left to right) Laura (Saeger), Laura and Honorary Laura (Ali) doing a crisp job on the door header.
  8. Signature pegs, with a peg named for each member of the leadership team.
  9. Wrestling a 40' tie beam into place with all hands and an assist from Big Blue.
  10. From above, by Kevin Brennan. Kevin is our certified Skyjack operator, and as such, he's been busy for days acquainting participants with this tool.
  11. Lots of waiting and watching.
