Virginia Military Institute FX 2006
Spring 2006 Timber Framing Project
March 31 - April 4, 2006
Harrisonburg, Virginia
Each year in what has become an annual tradition for Guild volunteers and the cadets at Virginia Military Institute is a spring timber framing project organized by VMI Professor Grigg Mullen. This year the project involved raising a 16' x 20' gazebo and 12' x 14' pergola in Harrisonburg’s Liberty Park. The raising included 24 VMI cadets as well as local volunteers.
The park has brick paving, stone planting beds, and benches along the banks of Blacks Run creek, which gurgles through the center of Harrisonburg. The park and the project are the result of efforts by a group called the Friends of Blacks Run.
The initial contact was through Dia Russell, the daughter of TFG Board member Al Anderson. Dia worked closely with the Friends of Blacks Run and is now working with the City of Harrisonburg. Al Anderson participated as one of the instructors for this project, along with Dan Fadden.
Saturday and Sunday was spent laying out and cutting, and Tuesday was raising day at Liberty Park. The work was done at Grigg Mullen’s
shop.
