Course Description
By designing your own timber framed house, you'll achieve the joy of having a home which is just what you want and not more than you need. This course is ideal for those who wish to have a timber frame home built for them by a contractor or who want to do the work themselves. Our goals are to develop the skills it takes to design a house that is affordable, energy efficient, beautiful and harmonious with your lifestyle. We will concentrate on site planning, timber frame construction principles (materials and styles), drafting techniques, visualization skills and the use of Christopher Alexander's A Pattern Language. Each student will design a house based on their individual "program" and requirements.

In this course, you'll learn to draw site plans and determine contours, discover how to apply a timber structural grid to "bubble diagrams" and see how this grid then generates working drawings from which to estimate costs and schedule the construction. Much of our time will be spent developing and drawing plans, elevations and sections, culminating in the building of models. Please bring with you any ideas, sketches or basic plans you wish to revise, as well as pictures and topographic maps of your potential site if you have one.

This course concentrates on whole house architectural design and will not focus on specific engineering principles of timber frame construction. For those interested in the technical details of timber framing, we recommend our course on Timber Frame Engineering and Joinery Decisions.
