Basic Rope Skills & Knowledge<
February 25-27, 2000, Saugerties, NY
Course Description
We are holding a basic rope skills and knowledge event in Saugerties, New
York, February 25–27. The workshop will be hosted and instructed by
Jim Kricker of Rondout Woodworking, with able assists from Grigg Mullen and Andy Smith. (See the current issue of Timber Framing for an article featuring Jim Kricker and his shop.)
The curriculum will include instruction on rope, assorted tools, and supplies, then progress to knotting, splicing, rope details (end whipping, serving, and
chafe protection), and properties of both natural and synthetic rope. Finally, participants will practice rigging and safety. This hands-on event includes
an introduction to the marlingspike. An excellent resource is Brion Toss’s book The Complete Rigger’s Apprentice, a must for every timber framer with an appetite for hand raisings. You may buy this book in the online store.
Course Fee
Tuition of $225 ($250 for non-members)
includes the workshop, simple meals, rustic accommodations, and excellent company.
There are a variety of accommodation choices for the workshop:
- The Woodstock-Saugerties area has more than its share
of bed and breakfasts ranging from $80 to $150 per night per couple. Jim will have brochures to send to the interested. Please indicate your interest when you register.
- Standard motels are also abundant, although if it is a good snow year, you should book early due to the influx of skiers.
- For the hearty, there is lots of tent room for camping near Jim's shop. You are also welcome to sleep on the floor in the shop if you want to share it with machines, unfinished projects, mice, and so on. A large
wood stove will maintain at least a livable temperature in the space during
February. This is a bring-your-own-bedding-and-pad situation. There will be a plastic outhouse outside and wash-up facilities either at the house or set up as gravity feed at the shop. There is no shower at the shop.
We look forward to introducing you to this unusual workshop!
